A Brief Wadsworth History

Founded in 1991, Wadsworth Brothers Construction is a heavy-highway and building contractor based in Draper, Utah.  The owner and president of Wadsworth Brothers Construction is Guy Wadsworth, a 30-year veteran of the construction industry.   Mr. Wadsworth attended the University of Utah, graduating magna cum laude in Finance as well as earning a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.).

Although Wadsworth Brothers Construction celebrates its 18th anniversary in business this year, construction has been a part of the Wadsworth family for three generations.  The Wadsworth family hails from Idaho, where previous generations started and worked for Wadsworth Construction of Idaho Falls.   Guy’s father-formerly a structural engineer-started Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction where Guy was employed for 13 years, working as a laborer, foreman, superintendent and eventually General Manager.

Today, the Wadsworth name is synonymous with heavy-highway construction in Utah and Wadsworth Brothers is proud to carry on the family tradition of hard work and craftsmanship.  Although Wadsworth Brothers Construction began as a bridge contractor, today our firm has several divisions and has diversified into a multifaceted contractor.

The Heavy-Highway Division, the historic base of the company, focuses on traditional projects such as bridges and overpasses.  The company has completed several very high profile projects such as the 2002 Legacy Bridge at the University of Utah, the Virgin River Bridge near Hurricane and the “Lego” bridges on east I-215.   Today the highway division has also branched into concrete paving, water tanks, pile-driving and steel erection.

The Building Division specializes in concrete frames and parking structures with over a million square feet of parking completed to date, and another million under contract this year alone.   Heavy capital investment in form systems, shoring, and cranes, as well as extensive experience in design and value-engineering have allowed Wadsworth Brothers to become the preeminent parking garage contractor in the area.

The Precast Division, a wholly owned subsidiary operating as Five Diamond Precast, manufactures and installs precast concrete products from it’s facility located in North Salt Lake.  Organized in 2004, the precast division has already cast and installed over 100,000 feet of precast concrete barrier and thousands of feet of noise wall in Utah and Idaho.

Wadsworth Brothers Construction has literally grown from a one-man operation running out of the back of a pick-up truck to a major regional highway and frame contractor over the past 18 years.  Wadsworth Brothers Construction now works throughout the intermountain area and is licensed for General Building and General Engineering construction in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, California and Nevada.

Our success is attributable to two core principles-the first, an old western adage that “you either make dust or eat dust”.  We attempt to “turn” our projects as quickly as possible recognizing that neither the owner, the traveling public, nor the contractor has anything to gain by dragging a job out longer than it should take to build.

The second principle is that our own success is determined in no small part by our willingness to give back to the community.  We adamantly believe in the concept of “pay it forward” and in helping those in our community least able to help themselves.   The principle has served us well and we have been richly blessed for our willingness to share with those less fortunate.

We often find ourselves in competition with older, better-known firms in town that trot several well-dressed salesmen and put out a slick sales pitch to an owner when vying for a job.  We believe that when an owner selects a contractor they need to consider the following:  Do you want the guy who sends you a bunch of suits to give you a sales job, or the one who sends the guys to get the job done right?   At Wadsworth Brothers our superintendents are our best salesmen.   The average age of our superintendents is about 50 years and they all have over 20 years experience, so you know you’re not going to get some “20-something” kid to run your job once the salesmen leave.

At Wadsworth Brothers Construction we’ve been getting the job done right for over 18 years and we are looking forward to the next 18 years and beyond.
