Guy Wadsworth, President of Wadsworth Brothers Construction, has received the 2009 Trailblazer Award from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for his pioneering work in Accelerated Bridge Construction.

The Trailblazer Award is given annually by UDOT to a person who has fostered, advanced and advocated research in transportation in Utah over a substantial period of time.

Over the past several years, UDOT in partnership with Wadsworth Brothers Construction has pursued various methods to shorten construction time and reduce the impact of construction on the traveling public. One of the most innovative approaches has been Accelerated Bridge Construction, or “ABC”.

During the summer of 2008, in a nationally unprecedented event, Wadsworth Brothers Construction moved four massive bridges into place over the span of just two weekends. These bridges were located along I-80 in Parleys Canyon at Mt. Dell and Lambs Canyon.  The bridge replacements in Parleys Canyon offered unique challenges due to the lack of detours and the need for coordination with businesses to reduce construction impacts. There was no margin for error since the bridge replacements had to occur quickly to restore traffic flow on the interstate.

Wadsworth Brothers Construction responded by meeting the challenges and exceeding national records for bridge replacement time. Over the first weekend, two bridges in these locations were replaced in 22 hours. Over the second weekend, the two eastbound bridge replacements at these locations were completed in 16 hours, the fastest known bridge replacement for two structures in North America.

According to Jim McMinimee, the UDOT Project Development Director, Wadsworth Brothers is a “world class” construction company. “Guy Wadsworth and his team of structural experts have brought Utah national recognition through their innovative and amazing construction feats. It is a privilege for UDOT to partner with Wadsworth Brothers Construction.”

Founded in 1991, Wadsworth Brothers Construction has grown into one of the top highway and bridge contractors in the State of Utah (126 million in 2008) that includes Heavy Highway/ Bridge and Structures Division; Building Division (Vertical Parking Structures); and a Pre-Cast Division.    The company has been recognized as the “Best Commercial Contractor” four years in a row by the UTAH BEST OF STATE organization, “Best Transportation Project” by McGraw-Hill publications and “Transportation Project of the Year” by the Associated General Contractors.
