WADSWORTH BROTHERS SAVES CRUMBLING BRIDGE

May 4th, 2009

(SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH) May 4, 2009 – A bridge along Interstate 15 in Bountiful was beginning to crumble on April 27 and motorists were calling 911 to report concrete falling down onto the road below.

Officials from the Utah Department of Transportation placed an emergency call to Wadsworth Brothers Construction to bolster the 500 South overpass on a temporary basis until more permanent repairs could be made.

The bridge deck was experiencing “spalling” or flaking in the concrete due to the freeze-thaw cycle causing the concrete around the steel to break down.  The structural integrity of the bridge, which was built in the late 1960’s, was not weakened and the steel was inspected to be sound.

Crews from Wadsworth Brothers worked around the clock Friday through Sunday to make permanent repairs the bridge by removing the old, failing concrete and building forms and pouring new concrete segments of the highway to shore up the bridge.

Wadsworth Brothers beat UDOT’s anticipated completion timeline by 13 hours ahead of schedule by completing the job on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 pm and reopening the busy I-15 freeway corridor for Monday morning’s rush hour traffic.
